Driver of Tesla vehicle died in the crash with the trailer which came across the road while the car was driving on autopilot. There's an ongoing investigation on Tesla's systems.
Joshua Brown from Ohio died in the crash on Florida while the car was driving on autopilot, and this crash initiated an investigation of the American office for traffic safety.
Accident occurred when the trailer passed across the road in front of Model S, and wasn't detected by the car's system and the driver for whom they say in Tesla, is responsible for vehicle's actions, even with the autopilot turned on.
Because of the trailers height, the first contact was made by the trailer and windshield. Tesla state that if the car hit the front or the back of the trailer, the security systems would probably prevent serious injuries. Tesla's cars passed over 210 million kilometers on autopilot, and they add that in average there is a fatality every 96 million kilometers globally.
Investigation is a preliminary evaluation which will determine if the autopilot worked correctly and based on the results, the vehicle may be pulled off the market.
On Tesla's blog they said once again that their customers need to accept that this is a public beta test on the car's functionality and that the system is designed in the way that the driver still needs to be in control of the car and have control and responsibility of the car's actions.
Tesla's been criticized by some of the other companies for implementing such a system while it's not yet fully functional, and there's also a fact that the car can take care of a lot of tasks safely and precisely and because of that, a driver gets false sense of security in the car's ability to do everything on it's own. We could see that from series of tests of Tesla systems in which people do the opposite of the instructions given by the company, and recently we've been able to see the video where driver sleeps while the car drove itself.
