On the 52nd election Car of the Year, the oldest and the most significant European car election of the year, the German compact won the jury.
Opel Astra is the European car of the year 2016. So decided the jury of the oldest car election Car of the Year. The new Opel's compact took the throne as the car of the year in several countries already. Even so, the Car of the Year award is a special achievement, so Karl-Thomas Neumann, director of Opel, got a good reason to open a bottle of champagne. Astra received 312 votes, on the second place is Volvo XC90 with 294 points and on the third place is Mazda MX-5 with 202 points.
Car of the Year election took place since 1964. Opel received five titles so far. The other victorious cars were Kadett (1985), Omega (1987), Insignia (2009) and Ampera (2012). With the exception of hybrid and expensive Ampera that never took the glory they expected it would, after winning the award, other cars got high scores on the market.
European experiences still indicate that winning the Car of the Year award is a good foundation for promotion on the market and achieving a great number of sales. Even so, in the last few years we're getting an impression that the significance of the title is slowly fading. The reason is that in the flood of a great selection it's not getting any more easy to declare the winner and declare one car more significant than the other. That's why Car of the Year doesn't have the attention that it was getting before. Today it became the smaller formality in Geneva, a day before the saloon is being open.
